- Wood is a natural product with variations that lend to its beauty.Stain absorbs distinctly to different parts of the wood. And the grain variations show up on each slat. Remakes will not be issued for differences in wood graining or staining if orders are placed at different times. We can not guarantee a natural product like wood will be the same with every shipment.
- *The following terms describe acceptable – and beautiful – wood characteristics found randomly throughout all wood blind products.
Flat Grain
Cutting the board tangent to the growth rings causes a flat grain. It appears as a cathedral or swirling grain pattern.
Tiger Striping
Tiger striping is a grain structure caused by irregular growth due to temperature changes and environmental factors. It shows up a cross grain pattern resembling the striping on a tiger’s coat.
Burl Figures
A burl figure is a grain pattern of swirls or small circles in the wood about the size of a dime. They are caused by irregular growth of the outer surface of the tree.
Knots
Knots are formed when a branch intersects into the vertical growth of the tree. They are typically dark due to the soft inner core of the growing cells.
Pin Knots
A pin knot is a small knot which is less than 1/4" in diameter.
Edge Knots
Edge knot is a knot that appears on the edge of the board.
Pin Hole
A pinhole is a hole in a small knot where the softer wood has fallen out during cutting.
Sugar Deposits
Sugar deposit is a dark brown streak with a softer texture caused by sap being trapped in the tree.
Mineral Deposits
Mineral deposit is a dark brown streak in the wood caused from fungus that once grew in the wood. Mineral deposits are typically solid and are the same density as the surrounding wood.
* The following are finish tolerances
Clear Finish
Very light mineral streaks and sugar deposits are permitted. One solid knot up to 1/32" in a three-foot section of slat is permitted.
Light Stains
Light mineral streaks and sugar deposits up to 1/4" width and 3" length are permitted. If there is more than one per slat, there must be a minimum of 12" between each one.

Cleaning and Care

Regular care will result in better appearance and performance from your Blinds First wood blinds.
